Ways To Cope When Life Gets Tough

Speak To Friends and Family

When you feel down or depressed it can make you want to isolate yourself from the people that you care about. No one likes the thought of being a burden and as such, we tend not to want to worry our friends and family with how we are feeling. However, as the saying goes – a problem shared is a problem halved, and although speaking to someone might not be the miracle answer you hope for it can often help. It is important to remember that you are not alone in how you are feeling and by speaking to friends and family, you can help to build up a support network to rely on when days are tough. Of all the ways to cope when life gets tough, this one can be easily accessible.

Learn To Say No and Set Boundaries

Being a people pleaser can be exhausting – we feel as though we don’t want to let anyone down and so we say yes toe everything – all the events we are invited to, the favours we are asked and all of the obligations that we feel we have. The truth is that you need to start putting yourself first – and if you don’t, you’ll just end up burning out. Learn to say no to the things that you really do not want to do, or the times when you need to stay home and rest. No one will hate you for it, and you’ll actually be a better friend by having the energy to socialise when the time is right.

Take Time Out For Yourself

Taking time out for yourself is important and can come in all shapes and sizes. It could be that attending a Zumba class makes you feel great and it could be that you like to just have an hour of quiet time when you get home from work. Do what you can to shift things around in your day to day schedule to allow you to make time for these things when you can – speak to the people in your house about your needs (and theirs) and work together to make all of that happen.

Tackle Any Real Problems That You Have

If you have real problems that are keeping you awake and making you worry then do what you can to tackle these and get them ticked off of your list. For example, if you have a bill you’re worried about paying or something at work that is making you dread going in then do what you can to tackle these and ensure that they don’t keep you awake another night. You might need to speak to a friend for support in this and that is okay – don’t be ashamed of what you’re doing or how you are feeling. Concentrate on the way you’re going to feel when these things are ticked off and how much weight will be lifted.

Understand What Is Making You Feel The Way You Are

The way you are feeling might not be triggered by anything in particular and that is okay, however, if the way you feel is triggered by a series of events or something that happens in your daily routine then it is important to understand what is happening and if there is anything you can do to avoid it. It might not be an overnight fix but definitely, something to work towards which might help make your day to day life a little easier.

Seek Professional Help

There comes a time when you might need to seek professional help and there is no shame in this. Online counselling works really well for some people – because you get to talk to someone about how you are feeling and get practical, professional advice on how you can cope. It can be a big step to reach out and ask for help in this way, but you deserve to feel good and happy and it is a step that may well help you make that happen.

Of course, everyone is different and if you’re feeling down or out of sorts then it is important to do what is best for you. Always speak to others when needed but we hope that these tips on ways to cope when life gets tough.
