Maintaining good relationships with your child’s teachers is quite important as your child moves through school. Not only does it create a line of communication between you both, but it allows you to keep tabs on your child and show them that you’re paying an active interest in their education. There are also times where you need to lean on one another for support, like getting homework done for example or ensuring that your child is on their best behaviour at school. There are many more reasons other than the ones we’ve briefly discussed. You can learn more about the importance of developing these connections and find tips on how you can do so below.
Reasons to Maintain a Good Relationship with Your Child’s Teachers:
The great thing about having strong relationships with their teachers is that you can be on the ball with regards to how your child’s getting on at school. They can tell you about any concerns they have and vice versa which can only be a good thing. It will give you insight into how you can support them better and help them to improve in their subjects.
Aside from the fact that you can stay in the loop with what’s going on, it also shows your child that you have a lot of respect for one another, making it difficult for them to cross either one of you. It also reinforces that they should respect teachers and authority. This translates into an improved attitude towards learning, greater academic achievement, and lower absenteeism.
Also, there’s very little that they can get away with if you both work together. You will know how often they receive homework etc.
How to Maintain Good Relationships:
Be Friendly
Making friends isn’t easy, even for us adults. A good place to start however is to just be friendly and show kindness. Teachers have a difficult job. They must take care of children in their care whilst also holding their attention and helping them to understand complex topics. It’s not a job for the faint hearted and showing consideration and appreciation can go a long way in sowing the seeds for a good relationship.

Teacher Gifts and Thank You Notes
A way to show your appreciation are end of term thank you notes written by your child. Although a simple thank you would more than suffice, it’s a nice way to show your gratitude.

Be Present To Build Relationships
It’s hard to build relationships with anyone if they aren’t present and making an active effort. When invited to meetings like parents’ evenings, be sure to attend and demonstrate your co-operation.
