Whether it’s your first time or you’ve done it before with your other children, choosing a school for your child is a difficult decision to make. It’s not just a day care centre but the place where they will acquire skills for the future, mindsets, make friends and ultimately the place where they will stay for the next few years. It can seem daunting but isn’t when you know the things to look out for.
To help fellow parents, we’ve collaborated with a pre-prep school in Hampton to create a checklist of the 5 things to consider when choosing a school for your child.
Location
It sounds obvious, but it’s important that the school that you choose is realistic to travel to. Consider the method of transport that you will use and whether it’s reliable. Thanks to tools like Google maps, it’s even possible to see what traffic is like at certain times of the day and select appropriate routes accordingly.
Facilities
While it’s not about shiny new IT suites, having better facilities can help your child to receive a better quality of education. When technology works it’s brilliant, but when it’s not everything is awry. Within the private education sector, there are many great schools with their own range of brilliant facilities. Some have their own indoor pools, helping passionate students get all the practice that they need.

OFSTED Reports
If you want to make sure that there aren’t any underlying issues at any of the schools that you’re considering, OFSTED reports are a good place to look. They are objective reports carried out by school inspectors and detail issues from management and how schools are run to their commitment to helping SEND students.
Results
These are individual but can reveal patterns and tell you a lot about how well schools are at preparing their students for the future.
Your child
While we’ve included this last, it is possibly the most important to consider. As your child’s the one who will be making the move, you should consult with them about how they feel and give the opportunity to explore their new school environment.
