Ways To Make Living With an Older Relative Easier. If we could then lots of us would choose to have an older relative living with us rather than in somewhere such as residential care; in fact, sometimes this is the only practical way for a number of reasons. However, just because we want to live with an older relative that doesn’t mean that the whole process will run as smoothly as we like. So, let’s take a look at ways to make living with an older relative easier.
Living With an Older Relative – Your Own Space
It can be tough to work out how to do this in a smaller property but having space that is your own is really important – and your older relative is likely to want their own space too. Although you probably all have your own bedroom, having a separate space to chill can be helpful too. That doesn’t mean that you won’t or can’t spend time together, but having somewhere separate to relax is a good idea too! If you can’t do this then an evening every now and then in the living room on your own can really help.

Living With an Older Relative – Changes To The House
If you are having an older relative move in with you then making some changes to the house is likely to be necessary especially as their mobility starts to worsen. One of the first things you will probably need to look at is companies that install stairlifts. This helps to keep the whole house accessible and you lose the worry of how your relative is going to be getting up and down the stairs. Walk-in showers/a bath chair are also things you might want to consider. Speak to them about their needs, what they struggle with and come up with a plan together on what changes are practical.

Living With an Older Relative – Respect Eachothers Needs
As much as you will love each other and the experience is a worthwhile one, being respectful of each other’s needs is a must. It is likely to be a long time since you shared your living space with a parent for example, so you’ll both need an adjustment period to get used to things again. This is fine and there is nothing wrong with that – keep the lines of communication open and ensure that everyone is happy.

Living With an Older Relative can be a wonderful experience. Not only will it strengthen the bond between the two of you, but you’ll also get a chance to learn from their wisdom. They can tell you stories about the past, share tips for everyday life, and help you understand the importance of patience and compassion.
You’ll also get the chance to help them with tasks like grocery shopping and other errands, making their life easier and giving them a sense of purpose. What’s more, you’ll get to spend quality time with your relative, watching movies or playing board games or just having a good old chat. Living with an older relative can be an enriching experience and one that you won’t soon forget.
