The Best Herbs To Grow In Your Kitchen

There are lots of varieties of herbs that grow well indoors, therefore, when choosing the best herbs to grow in your kitchen, you’ll want to consider your favourite flavour combos, as well as thinking about the type of herbs that grow well indoors.

If you want to start growing herbs indoors, here are 5 of the best herbs to grow in your kitchen. These herbs are some of the nation’s well-loved favourites, with their flavours complementing a variety of dishes.

Basil

Basil grows well indoors and can easily thrive with very little attention. This herb is, of course, famous for its powerful flavour combo when combined with tomatoes, which makes it a great herb to grow in your kitchen. Individual leaves can be pinched off and added to all sorts of meals, including portions of pasta, varieties of salad, and even delicious pizzas. You can even use the fresh leaves to make your own homemade pesto!

Basil can be grown from seeds or bought as a small plant from supermarkets and garden centres. Stems do tend to go woody after a few weeks, so it’s best to keep a healthy supply of seedlings on the go if you’re a heavy basil user.

Chives

Chives appreciate a good source of natural light, so it’s best to place them in an area that gets plenty of light during the day. However, if that’s not possible, your chive plant will still grow well and produce wonderfully tasting leaves and flowers. Chives are part of the onion family and as such, make great additions to salads, egg mayonnaise mixes, and soups, as well as being used to garnish dishes. To harvest chives, use scissors to snip the individual leaves.

Thyme

Thyme is used in nearly every cuisine in the world, and there are lots of varieties to choose from. Thyme prefers a well-draining soil, so bear this in mind if you’re planning on planting these herbs in your kitchen as part of one big pot.

Mint

As far as the top herbs to grow in your kitchen goes, mint is probably one of the hardiest choices. It can withstand high temperatures and does well when situated on a sunny windowsill. Mint is a perennial plant that has the tendency to take over your kitchen space if you don’t regularly use the leaves. As with thyme, there are many varieties available, and the flavour differ from plant to plant. Mint leaves also make great additions to cocktails and mocktails.

There are many varieties of herbs that can be grown indoors, the ones mentioned above are just a few examples. Do you grow herbs on your kitchen windowsill? If so, what is your favourite herb to grow and how do you use it? Let me know in the comments.
