Whatever shoes you’re choosing to wear the last thing you want is for them to be dirty and look unkepmpt. In the past, canvas shoes have been nutorously difficult to clean, especially as they tend to come in lighter colours. Start Rite shoes recently put together some hints and tips for how to get stains out of canvas shoes, and I thought I would share with you the best of them:
Removing Stains
The way that you remove stains from canvas shoes will depend very much on the type of stain that your shoe has become victim to. For example, if your trainers are stained with grass then giving them a clean with a soft toothbrush and then a wipe over with a paste made from baking soda, lemon juice and water is a great place to start. Once you have done this you can then rinse the shoes with warm water and leave them out to dry.

Whereas if you have mud on your shoes then you might need to work a little harder to get the stains out. However, before you start scrubbing them with any sort of cleaner you need to make sure that you have brushed off any loose dirt, otherwise, you fall at risk of rubbing in the mud and causing the stain to get worse. If you have tough stains, for example, blood then a tiny amount of washing-up liquid directly onto the shoe, with a scrub and a rinse is a good place to start – just make sure you use a clear colour washing-up liquid.
Using the Right Products
Much like cleaning anything in your household, if you’re using something to clean your canvas shoes then it is important that you use the right product – otherwise, you could cause your shoes damage. Places like Start Rite do cleaning mousses and products that are designed specifically for cleaning delicate items like canvas shoes and therefore are a great place to start. If you decide that you want to put your shoes in the washing machine, then protecting them with a pillowcase & using a low temperate is a must.
If you have any tips on how to get stains out of canvas shoes we’d love to hear them
