As a parent, it is important to find ways for your child to manage their emotions. Ater all, emotions are what control our actions and behaviour towards society. Of course, there needs to be a limit as to what your child can and can’t do, and parents should feel confident to step in and tell their child no. However, being too pessimistic and constantly holding your child back will lead to them being unable to express their emotions well. This will affect them when it comes to their academic journey as well as life. if you are struggling, here are some ways you can teach your child to manage their emotions.
Model healthy emotional self-management. Adult tantrums can look like yelling and getting angry at everything very easily. It is well known that children are like sponges and absorb everything they see and hear. With parents being directly in the line of fire, it is imperative you try and keep your calm when it comes to difficult situations. Try and speak respectfully in front of them when dealing with difficult situations to demonstrate that a hard time does not mean a chance for a meltdown.
Accept your child’s feelings. When your child is going through something difficult, help them communicate their feelings with you instead of shouting at them for causing an inconvenience. Even if the tantrum is unnecessary for the situation, ensure your child knows that you have acknowledged their feelings and that they are being heard. Majority of the time, tantrums are just a cry for attention. Speaking softly may be the quickest way to calm them down.

Heavy punishments such as hitting, or isolation are never the answer to bad behaviour. Not only will it aggravate your child to do it more, but it will lead to an individual who feels unheard. Instead, try positive guidance and help them process the emotion they’re feeling.
Children who are parented softly not only are able manage their emotion better, but also gain a lot of resilience which is important to have. If you’re working on managing your child’s emotions better, try some of the tips above and see how you get on. Best of luck!
