May 23, 2023

What Important Life Skills Should I Teach My Child? As children grow up, they must learn to deal with things by themselves. You won’t always be there so you will need to work on building their confidence, independence, and work on developing their life skills.

In this post we explore four that are the most important and tips from a private school in Surrey on how you can work on them with your child.

What Important Life Skills Should I Teach My Child?

Life Skills  – Creative Thinking

Creative thinking is perhaps one of the most important skills to explore with children as it allows them to think innovatively and create their own ideas. Many other skills also rely on creativity, such as problem solving and critical thinking. There are lots of ways that you can build your child’s creativity and play is at the centre. From crafting to a game of hide and seek, children must use their imagination to think of ideas which helps to strengthen their creative thinking skills.

Life Skills  – Problem Solving

Problem solving is a transferable skill that your child will need throughout their life. It’s the ability to think creatively and come up with solutions. Again, there are multiple ways to work on problem solving with children, including exposure to real life situations and games that test their thinking.

Life Skills  – empathy

The ability to show compassion and relate to others on an emotional level is important for socialising as it allows us to be there for others and respond appropriately in social situations. To work on it with your child you will first need to build their emotional intelligence and awareness of those around them which you can do by labelling the different emotions and pointing them out.

Resilience

Things go wrong and it’s a part of life. Resilience is how we deal with those setbacks and get back up, so is a vital skill to work on with children. To help them build resilience, children must first have the opportunity to experience those kinds of situations and emotions, which means allowing them to go out and make mistakes. You will also need to work on their self-esteem and give them the encouragement to try again. Over time this will grow and so will their resilience.

As well as these, confidence is important to work on as it gives children the courage to put themselves out there, learn and grow.
