Between the ages of 2 and 3 years old, children begin to learn new words at a rapid rate and start asking questions about the world around them to get a clearer understanding. Nurturing your child’s curiosity will not only help them to become more knowledgeable but also grow to become a critical thinker and build a lifelong love for learning. Bishopstrow College, an independent international school that provides boarding school preparation programmes, shares a few ways in which you can do this and how to raise an inquisitive child.
How To Raise an Inquisitive Child
Take Your Child to The Library
The library is a hub for information with a book on almost every subject, allowing your child to seek knowledge and answer their burning questions. In the process, you can get your child into reading while allowing them to explore themselves and their interests. This extra practice can help to improve their reading ability, allowing them to progress further and make understanding new concepts easier.
Don’t Over Complicate Things
When answering questions, it is important to bear in mind your child’s age and stage of development to avoid overloading them with confusing information. Make answers to the point and use examples to help them better understand.
Work Things Out Together
Sometimes mums don’t have all the answers and that’s okay. Working together to find them can help with bonding and teach your child how to tackle problems using critical thinking and problem-solving skills in real life.
Take the Lead
Parents are role models to their children that try to emulate their behaviour. Setting a good example by asking questions and demonstrating a desire to learn more can help your child to be more curious, question things and carry out their own research.
No Question Is a Silly Question
Creating an environment at home where your child can freely ask questions, even silly ones, can help them to be more inquisitive without having the fear of being shut down.
