Preparing Your Child for the School Bus – Many children ride the bus to get to school and it can be a valuable experience for them. They can learn about time keeping, develop confidence and the skills needed to navigate and find their way around new places. If it’s their first time, they may be a little nervous and apprehensive which is completely expected and normal. To make this transition a smoother one, here are some tips from a primary school in Cheltenham.
Preparing Your Child for the School Bus
-
Don’t Let Them Go Alone
One their first few days, it’s a good idea to accompany your child. That way, they’ll feel a little more comfortable and be able to get used to the journey. You can even do this before they go back by taking a few test runs.
-
Look For a Buddy
You might also want to find them a buddy to do the journey with. You can ask their friends’ parents to see if there will be anyone taking the same route and suggest that they make the trips together.
-
A Map
While it might seem a little old fashioned, a map can prove to be useful when your phone battery runs out or technology fails in other ways. In the event that they get lost, they can use the map to find their way to school or back home.

How to Use The Bus Time Table
Buses run off a schedule are due at specific times. Their service also varies throughout the day and week which means that they will need to be able to read the timetable provided at the stop. Much of this is digital now but there are some that run off the old system.
-
Safety
While they get on and off the bus and even just sitting down, there are rules that they will need to adhere to for their safety as well as others. The most important rule is to stay seated. As the bus is a moving vehicle, it may suddenly jolt as the bus brakes which can throw them forwards. For this reason, it’s important that they press the buttons allocated and make their way to the front to get off once it has come to a complete pause.
If you have any tips on getting everyone ready for the school bus we’d love to hear them
