David Mitchell is ‘one of the most brilliantly inventive writers of this, or any county’ – Independent – and The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet is his electrifying new novel. It is set in 1799 on the artificial island of Dejima; a Dutch trading post attached by a guarded bridge to mainland Japan, which for two hundred years formed the only gateway between the xenophobic Shogunate and the West – a window into a hidden world, through which revolutionary ideas could slip. With foreigners forbidden from crossing Japan’s borders, and the Japanese forbidden from leaving on pain of death, Dejima is a purpose-built microcosm accommodating those who vainly strove to trade with Japan.
Come along and create and explore your very own Dejima at the CANDID ARTS TRUST (3 Torrens St, London, EC1V 1NQ ) on Tuesday 4th May 2010. Open from 12 – 5pm
